Baby seal was born in front of our guests!
Two seal mums gave birth for their pups in front of the guests in the Nyíregyháza Zoo at the same time. Unfortunately, one of the little seals was not capable of living, but Böbe who has already had a baby 4 years ago, gave birth to a healthy offspring.
The little seal’s birth can be witnessed by our audience, because this extraordaniry event happened in a pleasant summer afternoon on the waterfront. The birth itself was recorded by many visitors’ mobile phone.
The seal mother gave birth after a 10,5 months gestation and she raises her little one with a good care.
Although the seals have adapted to the aquatic lifestyle in many ways, as their bodies are streamlined, their nostril can be closed and their limbs were modified for flippers when they calve, they have to come to the shore.
Böbe is a 15 years old seal-lady who gave birth at the side of the pool.
The 8 kg, 60 cm pup is fine, lives with its mother and its 4 year old lives brother, „Barack” in the same pool.
It ranges along the Atlantic Ocean and the northern part of the Pacific Ocean. These animals bodies are protected from the low temperature of the water by a thick layer of fat. However, it means mechanical protection and nutrient stock it is also responsible for their thermal insulation. It is no coincidence that among the mammals of the world, the seals has the thickest and the fattest milk because calves need to grow their insulating layer rapidly.
The little one will be breastfed at the first 6 weeks by its mother and because of her milk is 12-13 times stronger than the cow’s milk by the end of the breastfeeding period the pup’s weight will be doubled, while the length will not change.
The Sosto Zoo expects proposals from visitors for the little one’s name but at first our zoo is going to keep the little elephant’s, who was born a month ago, naming ceremony next week.
