Addax antelope (Addax nasomaculatus) calves were born at Sosto Zoo

2012. 03. 08.

Listed as Critically Endangered as the species is believed to have undergone a decline well exceeding 80% over the past three generations.

Addax antelope (Addax nasomaculatus) calves were born at Sosto Zoo.

Despite of the parents’ colour, the male newborns are light brown. Our visitors can observe them from our so-called „Tarzan’s Trail”, which is a 300-m-long wood bridge through our Africa Panorama.

The word “nasomaculatus” comes from the Latin words “nasus” that means nose and “macula” that means a spot refers to the spots and facial markings of the antelope.

The addax is a critically endangered species of antelope that lives in the Sahara desert.

Addax antelopes are amply suited to live in the deep desert under extreme conditions. Addax can survive without free water almost indefinitely, because they get moisture from their food and dew that condenses on plants.

Listed as Critically Endangered as the species is believed to have undergone a decline well exceeding 80% over the past three generations.
