The newest addition of the camels’ family is a Bactrian camel foal (Camelus bactrianus) in Nyíregyháza Zoo at that area, which represents the wildlife of Asia. This group has already had 12 members which is the most populated group in our country. Our guests also witnessed the birth of her since after 12 months of gestation period she was born during the visitation period in the huge enclosure of camels.
The foal’s unique is that while the mother is brown, the little one herited her father's white fur. The currently 2-days old animal spends her time mostly with her mother, but she’s getting to be more and more familiar with the outside world and also with the rest of the group. The little girl is about 30kg but with with her long, thin legs and small humps she’s well below the size of the adults. If she grows up her weight is going to reach 500kg.
They are indigenous the arid parts of Asia, mostly domesticated, perfectly adapted to extreme weather conditions of their habitat. They excellently bear the heat and frost, as well as water and food shortages. They reserve fat in their humps, so the little girl will soon proudly shows her perky, tough humps.
