The EEP established an African elephant breeding centre in Sosto Zoo.
However Sosto Zoo kept Asian and African elephants previously as well but we did not possess any elephant breeding group so far.
The arrival of the animals was an enormous professional success, since an elephant can cost about 100.000 Euro and we received them (namely the bull and 4 cows) free.
Furthermore, our colleague called Zoltán Takács was encharged with the professional supervision of the East-Europe region.
The members of the elephant group arrived from different part of Europe like Sweden, Spain and Great Britain.
The elephant house had to be reconstructed due to the arrival of the adult bull, since the 18-year-old Jack’s feature is that during the so-called musth* the testosterone level raises 10 times more than the normal rate and the behaviour can change basically, for example he tries to destroy everything and he may hurt the others, thus we had to create an extremely strong single box for him by strengthening the separative wall.
Musth: Hormonal changes occur occasionally in adult male elephants, when they become extremely aggressive and dangerous.
