Asian small-clawed otters  were born
The babies are raised together by the team

The cubs, born after 60 days of gestation, are raised together by the team and currently live in the hidden "nursery", but will soon venture out into the paddock as they start to show interest in the outside world.

The Asian small-clawed otter (Amblonyx cinereus) is the smallest otter species. It differs in appearance and lifestyle from the European otter (Lutra lutra), which is native to Hungary and is highly protected. It is much smaller (weighing only 3-5 kg each) and, unlike its larger relative, is active during the day and less water-bound than other otter species. It lives in the shallow fresh and salt water systems of Southeast Asia, where it feeds mainly on fish, crustaceans and molluscs.

Did you know? The Asian small-clawed otter family is very close-knit. Not only the monogamous parent pair, but also the older offspring are involved in the care of the young. This is also the case here at our zoo. In addition to the breeding pair, the 3 pups born last year are also looking after the newest members of the team with loving care.

The 6 two-week-old offspring will open their eyes at around 40 days and start to familiarise themselves with the aquatic environment at 7-9 weeks.

They are listed as 'vulnarable' on the IUCN Red List. Its population is in decline. As with most species, habitat loss and pollution are the main threats.
