3 month old lemur baby

2015. 07. 16.

Our lemur baby, which can rarely can be seen at zoos, became 3 months old

A very rarely seen yellow bearded lemur was born in our zoo. This exeptional breeding group is really effective, since we have offsprings every year, moreover this is the only group in the country. There are six members of this special lemur group with the little one.

The 3 months old puppy was born after 130 days of gestation and while at the beginning the little one was spending his life with clinging to his mother's belly and back, now he is climbing alone and getting to know the world outside. He is a little real acrobat, mostly stays in the foliage and has already started to taste solid food, which consists of vegetables and fresh fruits and leaves.

The little one can be seen from a short distance by our visitors because this lemur group is in the woods, where visitors can enjoy access to the animals. In addition to as they go through the woods they can see the little elephant, Kito because he lives with his mother in the the neighborhood of the lemures.

The yellow-bearded lemur belongs to the brown lemur’s family, and they represent a separate subspecies. Their latin name is (Lemur fulvus mayottensis) covers many things, so the mayottensis term refers to the natural habitat is the Majotte Island, which is approximately 400 kilometers far of Madagascar. Their collecting name, the Lemur comes from the lemures (ghosts) word, as the former first European explorers believed them and the other lemures for spirits, since in the darkness they only heard the lemures’ squalling and see their bright yellow eyes in the foliage.
