Sosto Zoo is the fourth-most-visited cultural and touristic attraction in Hungary, which is a great honour, insomuch as Sosto Zoo has achieved this in 15 years.
The peak of our activity is the so-called Green Pyramid and Ocenarium, where several Asian species – from ant to elephant – can be found. This building won the special prize of Hungarian Chamber of Architects.
The most popular attraction in our zoo is the sealion-show and the monkey-forest. Our collection of pachyderms, big cats and bears is unique in Hungary. Some rare, special species like Indian rhinoceros and white tiger can be found only in our zoo in Hungary.
150 individuals of 50 species were born at Sosto Zoo in 2011, most of them are the offspring of specimens placed out by the EEP ( European Endangered Species) and the ESB (European Studbook) programs, for example white wolves, leopard, camels, lemurs, etc, and some unique birth like harbour seal’s and pygmy hippopotamus’s one.
Sosto Zoo has increased its collection with several new species like kudu, Siberian tiger and mangrove monitor.
We have started scientific cooperation in international projects, we were host of several conferences, and an African elephant breeding centre was established in Sosto Zoo.
The census return is the following: in the beginning of 2012, 4633 specimens of 546 species could be found in Sosto Zoo.
