The World Wildlife Federation declared 4th December the International Cheetah Day.
The Namibian Cheetah Conservation Fund has issued a call to ensure that this notable day is celebrated as widely as possible.
As the Zoo of Nyíregyháza keeps cheetahs and finds the conservation of this species a very important mission, along the education of people, it has joined the International Cheetah Day and this day is about these special felines.
On the park’s official Facebook page, the cover picture was changed today, as requested, moreover, interesting facts can be read of these iconic animals every hour. In addition, those who paint their faces “cheetah”, or wear a cheetah mask today, may enter the park for free.
The cheetah was originally spread throughout Africa, and in Asia it lived from the Arabian Peninsula to the southern part of India. It is an endangered species; it was massively hunted for its skin in the past. Today, the shrinking habitat and the decline in the prey animals cause the greatest concern.
According to the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN), the African subspecies of the cheetah has a vulnerable status, while the Asian subspecies is almost extinct. In Africa, only 10,000 cheetahs live in the open nature.
