New Humboldt-penguins have arrived at our Zoo

New Humboldt penguins have arrived in SóstóZoo

Although the Ice Age Interactive Animal Show, built as part of the Modern Cities Program - which is the country's largest countryside zoo investment - will only open next spring, the visitors can already see its first inhabitants, the Humboldt penguins, in the outdoor pool.

The Zoo has created, in the European Species Conservation Program, a breeding centre of the penguin species that can only be seen here in the country, and the individual penguins with different genetic characteristics came from different zoos.

In August, the birds came from Sweden and Germany, and now from two other German zoos and from Slovakia, so the colony has currently 15 individual birds. The animals “in tuxedo” move more and more comfortably in their territory every day, where the visitors can also admire them underwater. We have no complaints about their appetite either, they consume 6 kg of capelin and herring per day.

Typically for the penguins, this species lives near the sea, and it only goes to the shore to build nests. The Humboldt penguin is native to the coasts of Chile and Peru. Its name refers to the Humboldt current located near its habitat, named after the explorer Alexander von Humboldt.
