A 4-tonne groom has arrived at the African elephant cows of the Nyíregyháza Zoo.

The 20-year-old bull, named Jambo, arrived from the Valencia Zoo in Spain as part of the European Species Conservation Programme.

The Nyíregyháza Zoo has been keeping African elephants since 2006 and, in a unique move in the country, has set up a breeding centre for the elephants, where 4 calves have been born so far.

Jambo, who was brought here with the undisguised intention of becoming a companion for the 2 elephant female, 23-year-old Kwanza and his daughter Kimani, 6.

Jambo was born in Colchester in 2004 and has lived in Bioparc Valencia since 2008 and the ladies of Nyíregyháza will be his first date partners.

The transport of the multi-tonne animal went without a hitch. His Spanishelephant keeper  also accompanied the proboscis to his new home to help build a relationship between the Nyíregyháza colleagues and the animal.

Jambo is now accustomed not only to his indoor and outdoor enclosures, but also to the rest of the elephant herd, so guests arriving at the 35-hectare zoo can now see the 3 animals together.
